This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Northern Negro Grassroots Leadership Conference, held at the Historic King Solomon Baptist Church in Detroit.
James and Grace Lee Boggs were among the main organizers of the gathering with Milton Henry. At the closing rally on November 10, 1963, Malcolm X delivered a powerful speech that came to be known as “Message to the Grassroots.”
The NNGLC was a moment that helped to crystalize questions that help to build and advance revolutionary movements. In this spirit, we want to reflect together on the questions: how can reflecting on the NNGLC help move our work forward today? How does the global context influence what we are doing now? Are we doing enough at the local level to connect to global struggles, or do we need to be moving differently?
