Introduction to Movement Lawyering in Detroit and Beyond

The Introduction to Movement Lawyering in Detroit and Beyond workshop will introduce students and attendees to the Movement Lawyering Framework, which centers community power building and seeks to democratize the law. The panel will feature lawyers and organizers working in Detroit and across the country to build the power of communities and dismantle harmful systems. They will share insights about how law students and lawyers can support local movement. Representatives from Law for Black Lives will also discuss national examples of movement lawyering and the limits of the law. Participants will learn how the Movement Lawyering Framework can help law students develop a practice that is rooted in liberation and uses the law as a tool to building community power.
