Summer is Here!

The longest day of the year has passed, and we’re gearing up for a powerful summer here at DJC. We started the season off right with two joyous events: a Father’s Day Bail Out Celebration and a stellar Juneteenth event with the No New Jails Detroit Coalition. We’ve also welcomed eight summer interns into our offices for the season: Leila Ullmann, Katie Olds, Meredith Luneack, Shirley Rivas, Taylor Dodson, Vishal Reddy, Lindsay Calka, and Wilder Erb. You can see them in the photo above after finishing an Abolition 101 training session with our Founding ED, Amanda Alexander. These soon-to-be movement lawyers began their internships in Miami, learning about a variety of legal practices from our team, as well as our partners from the Community Justice Project and Law For Black Lives. We’re looking forward to spending the summer with them and tapping into their collective brilliance.

Father’s Day Bail Out Celebration

On the Saturday before Father’s Day, we hosted a celebration for the fathers that The Bail Project has bailed out in Detroit this year at Focus: Hope. It was a joyful event with face-painting, games, a photobooth, free haircuts, and an incredible lunch from Paradise Foods. We even learned how to do the hustle a few different ways! Our partners from Michigan Liberation and The Bail Project joined us in celebrating the importance of keeping families together. 62% of the people incarcerated in Wayne County are there pre-trial, and The Bail Project does the crucial work of bailing people out every day. If you have a loved one in the Detroit area who is locked up simply because they can’t afford bail, please reach out to our Bail Disruptors today.
