McGregor Fund grants $600,000 for community law center
A $600,000 grant from the Detroit-based McGregor Fund is supporting the launch of a new, nonprofit community law center aimed at helping low-income and indigent Detroit and Wayne County residents overcome legal barriers to securing a driver’s license, employment, housing and other opportunities.
The center will help residents address traffic fines and other minor fines, low-level warrants, arrest and conviction records and other justice system involvement that have represented barriers to economic advancement.
In addition to providing free legal services to those residents, the new center will also help create housing and economic opportunities such as small-business support for formerly incarcerated people and advocate for criminal justice reform at the state and local levels.
