Ritchie detail why policing doesn’t stop violence\, instead perpetuating widespread harm; outline the many failures of contemporary police reforms; and explore demands to defund police\, divest from policing\, and invest in community resources to create greater safety through a Black feminist lens. \nCentering survivors of state\, interpersonal\, and community-based violence\, and highlighting uprisings\, campaigns\, and community-based projects\, No More Police makes a compelling case for a world where the tools required to prevent\, interrupt\, and transform violence in all its forms are abundant. Part handbook\, part road map\, No More Police calls on us to turn away from systems that perpetrate violence in the name of ending it toward a world where violence is the exception\, and safe\, well-resourced and thriving communities are the rule. \nAbout the Author \nAndrea J. Ritchie is a nationally recognized expert on policing and criminalization\, and supports organizers across the country working to build safer communities. She is co-founder of Interrupting Criminalization\, the author of Invisible No More: Police Violence Against Black Women and Women of Color\, and the co-author (with Mariame Kaba) of No More Police (The New Press). She lives in Detroit. \nNikkita Oliver (they/them) is an artist\, community organizer\, abolitionist\, educator\, and attorney. Working at the intersections of arts\, law\, education\, and community organizing Nikkita strives to create experiences which draw us closer to our humanity and invites us to imagine what we hope to see in the future. (Nikkita identifies as Black\, multi-racial\, queer\, and non-binary.) \nAmanda Alexander\, founding Executive Director of the Detroit Justice Center\, is a racial justice lawyer and historian who works alongside community-based movements to end mass incarceration and build thriving and inclusive cities. Originally from Michigan\, Amanda has worked at the intersection of racial justice and community development in Detroit\, New York\, and South Africa for more than 15 years. \n“This book pushes those of us who have been fighting police and sexual violence for decades to think past prosecutions and prisons toward a future where we stop violence before it starts and transform harm when it happens.”—dream hampton\, filmmaker and writer\, Surviving R. Kelley and Decoded \n“In the powerful and generative tradition of Black feminist freedom-making\, No More Police not only presents a compelling case for the abolition of police\, but points us in the direction of building a safer and more just future. Ritchie and Kaba have worked for decades in transformative justice and abolitionist movements. The richness of that experience\, the love that fuels it\, and the brilliant insights that flow from it\, shine brightly in this book.”—Barbara Ransby\, activist\, author\, and historian\, Making All Black Lives Matter \nMake sure to save a spot with a ticket because tickets are limited. \nVaccination Requirements: You may be asked to show proof that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or a COVID Free Test Result for entrance to this event. SUMMARY:Black August Scavenger Hunt
DESCRIPTION:Join us for some friendly competition as we host DJC’s first Black August Scavenger Hunt! \nForm your own team\, or join someone else’s\, and compete in a race across the city of Detroit\, solving clues that will give you a firsthand look at the work we do at the Detroit Justice Center. \nYou’ll meet our staff\, learn about the impact we’re making\, and see for yourself exactly how we’re advancing the fight for freedom in Detroit. \nAfter the scavenger hunt\, we’ll have a community gathering at the Oakland Avenue Urban Farm to award the winner\, break bread\, and connect with each other. \nDJC’s work is rooted in a long legacy of struggle. Each year\, Black August is recognized as an annual celebration of the Black liberation movement and a time to call to free those who are imprisoned for engaging in that fight. \nThis Black August\, deepen your knowledge and engagement with the movement for Black liberation happening right here in Detroit by being in community with DJC. \nCOVID-19 precautions: We have your safety in mind as the pandemic continues. Scavenger hunt teams are self-selected\, so you can opt to participate with people you feel safe around. Our community gathering that follows will take place outdoors with plenty of distance to minimize risks as much as possible. Masks are encouraged\, but not required\, to keep everyone healthy. \n† Do you want to participate\, but in a different way? SUMMARY:Cancelled: TO CREATE THE WORLD ANEW
DESCRIPTION:The Michigan Journal of Race & Law welcomes you to our 25th year anniversary symposium\, “To Create the World Anew: Movement Lawyering at the Heart of Race & Law.”\nREGISTER HERE\nFrom MI Journal of Race and Law: Our symposium seeks to recognize the Journal’s contribution to civil rights scholarship for the last 25 years\, while also questioning the greater role of lawyers and the law in social movements. We are examining case studies from Michigan that have required lawyers and non-lawyers to work in unison to bring greater change. Beginning with the fight for the right to water across Michigan\, to the response to the family separation crisis\, and the legislative and advocacy efforts to end the school to prison pipeline—we believe there are important lessons to be learned right here in our own community. We look forward to you joining us! \nSaturday\, March 28th\, 2020\nUNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN LAW SCHOOL\, JEFFRIES HALL 701 S STATE ST\, ANN ARBOR\, MI 48109\n***FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.***\n***SCROLL DOWN FOR AGENDA AND REGISTRATION FORM.***\n“Our challenge\, as we enter the third millennium\, is to deepen the commonalities and the bonds between these tens of millions\, while at the same time continuing to address the issues within our local communities by two-sided struggles that not only say ‘No’ to the existing power structure but also empower our constituencies to embrace the power within each of us to create the world anew.” \n– Grace Lee Boggs\, “These Are the Times to Grow Our Souls”

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Field Hearing on 5G and Big Data: Privacy\, Artificial Intelligence and the New Civil Rights Fights
DESCRIPTION:Interested in what’s happening with the fights around big tech\, facial recognition and data privacy? Join Senior Staff Attorney Eric Williams and others for what is sure to be an informative event! \nFrom Wayne Events: FCC Commissioner Geoffrey Starks and FTC Commissioner Rebecca Kelly Slaughter will jointly host a field hearing in Detroit\, Michigan. The hearing will feature U.S. Representative Brenda Lawrence (MI-14) and convene community leaders based in Detroit\, renowned scholars\, and policy advocates from across the United States to discuss the intersecting roles of the FCC and FTC in promoting equity for 5G technology and big data. The promises of an unprecedented level of connectivity with the deployment of 5G and sophisticated algorithms that utilize massive amounts of data are likely to transform the way we live\, work\, and play. The highest levels of connectivity cannot and should not be reserved for the few; the benefits of 5G technology must meet the needs of all Americans\, including low-income people\, people of color\, people living with disabilities\, people residing in rural communities\, children\, and the many ways in which those identities intersect. However\, connecting all communities is only half the battle: When these Americans are connected\, we must simultaneously work to minimize the privacy harms and other data abuses that may disproportionately fall on marginalized communities and particularly vulnerable populations\, such as children. During this hearing\, participants will discuss how to create and sustain a more equitable and connected world both online and offline.
