SUMMARY:21st Annual Detroit MLK Day Rally & March
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 21st Annual Detroit MLK Day Rally & March in honor of the actual historic legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. (Jan. 15\, 1929-April 4\, 1968). \nOur Executive Director\, Nancy Parker\, and our Community Legal Advocate\, Sonja Bonnett\, will both be speakers at this event.\nThis year’s event comes amid a heightening struggle for labor rights and against imperialist war across the United States and the world. \nOur invited speakers include Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib and UAW International President Shawn Fain. The event will be co-chaired by Aurora Harris\, lecturer in African American Studies at the University of Michigan-Dearborn and Abayomi Azikiwe\, editor of the Pan-African News Wire. \nThe rally and march will feature other speakers and artists including Atty. Nancy Parker\, Executive Director of the Detroit Justice Center and Wardell Montgomery\, Detroit poet and songwriter. \nThe rally and march will highlight speakers and artists from the Detroit area reflecting the wealth of community organizers and cultural workers in southeastern Michigan. A broad coalition of these social forces is very much needed in the coming year to meet the challenging facing the people of the city\, the country and the globe. \nBeginning in 2004\, the Michigan Emergency Committee Against War & Injustice (MECAWI) held the first MLK Day Rally & March in downtown Detroit. The following year the Detroit MLK Committee was formed bringing in veteran civil rights and social justice activists as well as younger generations of organizers and artists. \nSince 2019\, the gathering has been held at the Historic St. Matthew’s-St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church located on Woodward Ave. at Holbrook. This venue encompasses the first independent African American Church in the city of Detroit dating back to the mid-19th century. \nThe current period has been characterized by widespread strikes in various sectors of the economy including unions representing autoworkers\, heath care practitioner\, writers\, actors\, entertainment workers\, educators and service employees. During the last few months\, Detroit has been labelled “Strike City” because of the work stoppages involving tens of thousands of workers. \nWe will honor the increasing militant posture of working people\, a tradition in which the city was built upon. Labor unions are encouraged to participate in this event along with their rank-and-file members to symbolize the necessity of organizing and mobilizing the majority of people in order to achieve genuine democracy and economic rights. \nIn addition to labor activism\, we will acknowledge the antiwar and peace traditions of Dr. King\, who was martyred in Memphis\, Tennessee during his intervention in a sanitation workers’ strike in early 1968. Dr. King in the previous year\, 1967\, came out strongly against the U.S. genocidal war in Vietnam. \nToday we are facing yet another genocidal war against the people of Gaza in Palestine. Thousands have been killed including many children utilizing bombs and other weapons supplied by the U.S. government. \nInstead of ending the war in Palestine and Ukraine\, the current administration is demanding over $100 billion more for military adventures and containments from the Middle East and Eastern Europe to the Asia-Pacific and the southern border areas with the U.S. \nWe are rallying and marching for a cessation of militarism and economic exploitation. What is needed is a society where all people are guaranteed housing\, clean water\, food\, energy\, quality education and the right to equality and self-determination. \nYou can contribute to the costs for this event by sending a donation to the Detroit MLK Committee at 5920 Second Ave.\, Detroit\, MI 48202.

SUMMARY:Messages from the Grassroots: An Intergenerational Conversation
DESCRIPTION:About this event\n\n\n\n\nThis year marks the 60th anniversary of the Northern Negro Grassroots Leadership Conference\, held at the Historic King Solomon Baptist Church in Detroit. \nJames and Grace Lee Boggs were among the main organizers of the gathering with Milton Henry. At the closing rally on November 10\, 1963\, Malcolm X delivered a powerful speech that came to be known as “Message to the Grassroots.” \nThe NNGLC was a moment that helped to crystalize questions that help to build and advance revolutionary movements. In this spirit\, we want to reflect together on the questions: how can reflecting on the NNGLC help move our work forward today? How does the global context influence what we are doing now? Are we doing enough at the local level to connect to global struggles\, or do we need to be moving differently? \n\nDetroit Justice Center’s Development Assistant\, Triniti Watson\, will be on a panel at this event!

SUMMARY:Abolition Means No More War: Free Palestine Now!
DESCRIPTION:About this event\n\n\n\n\nPrison industrial complex (PIC) abolitionists have always understood the work to dismantle the PIC to be connected to global movements against war\, militarism\, and colonialism. In the past few weeks\, we’ve seen mass mobilization in solidarity with the Palestinian people as they face one of the deadliest assaults by the Israeli military in its history. \nOn Wednesday\, Nov 1\, join us for a critical discussion on the ongoing war on Palestine. Dr. Angela Y Davis\, Lara Kiswani (Executive Director of the Arab Resource and Organizing Center)\, Stefanie Fox (Executive Director of Jewish Voice for Peace)\, and Nadine Naber (INCITE! National) will join us in a discussion moderated by Mohamed Shehk (Campaigns Director of Critical Resistance) to help us understand the situation on the ground in Palestine\, how our organizations and people everywhere can mount effective resistance to the genocidal war against Palestinians\, and how we can use abolitionist strategies such as Dismantle-Change-Build\, Divest/Invest & “Defund\,” and “shrink and starve” to do so. \nOrganized by Critical Resistance. This event is also a fundraiser for Middle East Children’s Alliance (MECA)\, who are providing much needed aid to the people of Gaza. All funds will go to MECA after accessibility costs for this event. \nSpeakers: \nAngela Y. Davis is Professor Emerita of History of Consciousness and Feminist Studies at UC Santa Cruz. An activist\, writer\, and lecturer\, her work focuses on prisons\, police\, abolition\, and the related intersections of race\, gender\, and class. She is the author of many books\, from Angela Davis: An Autobiography (now available in a new edition from Haymarket Books) to Freedom Is a Constant Struggle. \nLara Kiswani is the Executive Director of Arab Resource & Organizing Center (AROC)\, serving poor and working class Arabs and Muslims across the San Francisco Bay Area\, and organizing to overturn racism\, forced migration\, and militarism. \nStefanie Fox\, MPH (she/her) is the Executive Director of Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP)\, a grassroots membership organization that organizes and mobilizes hundreds of thousands of Jews and allies into solidarity with the Palestinian freedom struggle and a vision of Judaism beyond Zionism. Stefanie joined JVP in 2009 as the organization’s first National Organizer (when the organization had six chapters and a few hundred members) and played multiple roles as part of the team that grew the organization into the largest progressive Jewish anti-Zionist organization in the world. Stefanie came up as a grassroots organizer\, educator\, and public health practitioner inside the global AIDS movement of the early 2000s\, and spent about a decade in neighborhood and issue-based community organizing toward racial and economic justice before joining JVP full-time. \nNadine Naber is a scholar-activist and co-founder of organizations and programs such as: Mamas Activating Movements for Abolition and Solidarity; the Arab Women’s Solidarity Association; Arab Movement of Women arising for Justice; the Arab American Cultural Center (UIC); and Arab and Muslim American Studies at UM\, Ann Arbor. She is founder of Liberate Your Research Workshops. She has been a board member of groups like INCITE! Feminists of Color against Violence; the Women of Color Resource Center; the Arab American Action Network; Al-Shabaka; and the National Council of Arab Americans. She is Professor in the Gender and Women’s Studies Program and the Global Asian Studies Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is the author of many books focusing on Arabs\, Arab Americans\, and feminism within these communities. \nModerator: \nMohamed Shehk is the Campaigns Director of Critical Resistance. \n  \nAbout Until Liberation: A Series for Palestine by Haymarket Books: \nToday\, we are confronting a watershed moment in the struggle against colonialism and apartheid. As an internationalist left around the world\, we must take a decisive stance in support of Palestinian liberation. \nHaymarket Books and partners are organizing an urgent series of online events to provide education in the context of current events. At Haymarket\, Palestine has always been at the core of our political and intellectual project\, and we believe free and accessible political education is crucial to solidarity efforts. \nThe situation is dire. As media outlets spread lies and misinformation\, politicians and journalists are paving the way for Israel to carry out mass genocide in Gaza. In the West Bank\, settlers are armed and carrying out pogroms. The governments of the USA\, UK and across the Global North are putting in place chilling measures to crack down on solidarity. The Israeli state is killing Palestinians with impunity and Palestinians everywhere are being silenced. \nWe are entering a new era of the struggle for Palestine and until Palestine is free\, none of us are free. Join us for a series of urgent conversations about the history\, politics\, and stakes of Palestinian liberation. \n——————————————————————— \nThis event is sponsored by Critical Resistance and Haymarket Books and is part of Until Liberation: A Series for Palestine by Haymarket Books\, cosponsored by Palestinian American Organizations Network\, Mondoweiss\, Spectre\, Dissenters\, Tempest\, Palestine Deep Dive\, The New Arab\, and more. While all of our events are freely available\, we ask that those who are able make a solidarity donation in support of our important publishing and programming work.

SUMMARY:Handle With Care: Shelter
DESCRIPTION:HANDLE WITH CARE: SHELTER\n~Featuring~ \nAsh Arder’s Whoop House\,\nInstallations from bree gant + DAAY + saylem m. celeste\,\nPerformance by VenusLoc\,\nA zine library by Flower Press + PaperStreet Press\, \nand other activities and experiences will be a beacon for an interactive sculpture garden about home space. \nJuly 22\, 2023\n4 pm – 7 pm\n2653 Hunt St\, Detroit\, MI 48207 (Outside)\nFree with RSVP\nIntergenerational participation is welcomed! \nAbout Handle With Care: \nHandle With Care is a three-part experimental series of community activations centered around the intuitive resilience of Detroiters and the role communal care plays in our collective resistance. Through the lenses of Abolition\, Transformative Justice\, and Community Care\, the series provides an accessible platform for participants to delve into fundamental human needs that shape our survival and the collective practices we hold to persist in our freedom struggles. Handle with Care will encourage Detroiters to rediscover and nurture their internal compass for accessing joy\, mutual perseverance\, and dreaming within the carceral landscape by making space for the knowledge within. This event series is the fruit of a long year of research through saylem m. celeste’s residency at the Detroit Justice Center and the pilot project of the resulting Transformative Justice/Black Feminist group\, Midnight Care Collective. \nHandle With Care is a place of respite\, play\, and possibility. Our offerings within this series are intended to provide a softened lens concerning social justice movement work\, communal relationships\, and healing beyond constricting ways of being. We explicitly stand to reject what removes us from our Care and denies us an “impossible” future\, past\, and now. \nWith this work\, we prioritize Black Women and Femmes\, Detroiters\, People impacted by the -isms of industrial complexes (prison\, medical\, non-profit\, etc.)\, people craving rest/connection\, traditionally misrepresented identities\, and folks interested in sustainable justice movement work. We welcome others who understand and uphold this lens within Abolition\, Detroit\, and Freedom. \nWe ask all community members who join to hold the values of centering the experiences of those most affected by structures of power. We do not stand in the authority of others’ healing- we hold space to express what we collectively need and reveal pathways to receive \nWe ask that you center these values within this series of care offerings.

SUMMARY:Opening: Free Your Mind— Art & Incarceration in Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Admission: $10 suggested donation. Free for MOCAD Members. \nJoin us as we open our Spring + Summer exhibitions and celebrate all the artists. We are excited to have artist and musician Sterling Toles share new music composed to accompany the Sydney James exhibition\, A Girl Raised in Detroit. A mainstay in Detroit’s cultural scene\, Toles will also provide the soundtrack for the rest of the evening. \n  \nFREE YOUR MIND:\nART AND INCARCERATION IN MICHIGAN\nAPRIL 14 – SEPTEMBER 3\, 2023\n  \nMIKE KELLEY’S MOBILE HOMESTEAD \nMOCAD is proud to partner with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum and the Michigan Justice Fund to present the timely exhibition\, Free Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan. Making art can be a transformative experience helping us to confront and address some of the most pressing issues of our time. Art shifts how we see and understand the world around and within us. Free Your Mind  invites us to consider these qualities of art while also grappling with the effects of the carceral system. The presentation of this exhibition in Detroit is especially crucial considering the construction of the new Wayne County jail. \nCurrently\, the United States incarcerates approximately 2.2 million people. In Michigan\, there are roughly 33\,000 residents serving time in the prison system. Working with a coalition of more than a dozen organizations\, Free Your Mind  showcases the inner worlds of incarcerated individuals and the fundamental issues that shape conversations around incarceration today. The exhibition centers key topics of inquiry around incarceration in Michigan – length of sentencing and prison overcrowding\, the impact on women and youth\, and the dangers of COVID-19. \nThis exhibition aims to cultivate a better understanding of how incarcerated individuals’ growth is linked to our society’s broader health. Free Your Mind  features artists\, poets\, and storytellers of outstanding achievement. The majority of these artists are either currently or formerly incarcerated. Their experiences invite us to consider art-making’s role in prisons as a liberating force. The artworks also ask us to approach the subject with an open mind and empathy. \nImage: Rafael De Jesus\, The Way It Is\, 2014. Acrylic on canvas. Courtesy the collection of Janie Paul.\nFree Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan  is organized by the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University and curated by Steven L. Bridges\, Senior Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs\, and Janie Paul\, Senior Curator and Co-founder\, Annual Exhibitions of Art by Michigan Prisoners\, a project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan. It is presented at MOCAD with support from the Michigan Justice Fund at the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan.

Ritchie detail why policing doesn’t stop violence\, instead perpetuating widespread harm; outline the many failures of contemporary police reforms; and explore demands to defund police\, divest from policing\, and invest in community resources to create greater safety through a Black feminist lens. \nCentering survivors of state\, interpersonal\, and community-based violence\, and highlighting uprisings\, campaigns\, and community-based projects\, No More Police makes a compelling case for a world where the tools required to prevent\, interrupt\, and transform violence in all its forms are abundant. Part handbook\, part road map\, No More Police calls on us to turn away from systems that perpetrate violence in the name of ending it toward a world where violence is the exception\, and safe\, well-resourced and thriving communities are the rule. \nAbout the Author \nAndrea J. Ritchie is a nationally recognized expert on policing and criminalization\, and supports organizers across the country working to build safer communities. She is co-founder of Interrupting Criminalization\, the author of Invisible No More: Police Violence Against Black Women and Women of Color\, and the co-author (with Mariame Kaba) of No More Police (The New Press). She lives in Detroit. \nNikkita Oliver (they/them) is an artist\, community organizer\, abolitionist\, educator\, and attorney. Working at the intersections of arts\, law\, education\, and community organizing Nikkita strives to create experiences which draw us closer to our humanity and invites us to imagine what we hope to see in the future. (Nikkita identifies as Black\, multi-racial\, queer\, and non-binary.) \nAmanda Alexander\, founding Executive Director of the Detroit Justice Center\, is a racial justice lawyer and historian who works alongside community-based movements to end mass incarceration and build thriving and inclusive cities. Originally from Michigan\, Amanda has worked at the intersection of racial justice and community development in Detroit\, New York\, and South Africa for more than 15 years. \n“This book pushes those of us who have been fighting police and sexual violence for decades to think past prosecutions and prisons toward a future where we stop violence before it starts and transform harm when it happens.”—dream hampton\, filmmaker and writer\, Surviving R. Kelley and Decoded \n“In the powerful and generative tradition of Black feminist freedom-making\, No More Police not only presents a compelling case for the abolition of police\, but points us in the direction of building a safer and more just future. Ritchie and Kaba have worked for decades in transformative justice and abolitionist movements. The richness of that experience\, the love that fuels it\, and the brilliant insights that flow from it\, shine brightly in this book.”—Barbara Ransby\, activist\, author\, and historian\, Making All Black Lives Matter \nMake sure to save a spot with a ticket because tickets are limited. \nVaccination Requirements: You may be asked to show proof that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or a COVID Free Test Result for entrance to this event. SUMMARY:Black August Scavenger Hunt
DESCRIPTION:Join us for some friendly competition as we host DJC’s first Black August Scavenger Hunt! \nForm your own team\, or join someone else’s\, and compete in a race across the city of Detroit\, solving clues that will give you a firsthand look at the work we do at the Detroit Justice Center. \nYou’ll meet our staff\, learn about the impact we’re making\, and see for yourself exactly how we’re advancing the fight for freedom in Detroit. \nAfter the scavenger hunt\, we’ll have a community gathering at the Oakland Avenue Urban Farm to award the winner\, break bread\, and connect with each other. \nDJC’s work is rooted in a long legacy of struggle. Each year\, Black August is recognized as an annual celebration of the Black liberation movement and a time to call to free those who are imprisoned for engaging in that fight. \nThis Black August\, deepen your knowledge and engagement with the movement for Black liberation happening right here in Detroit by being in community with DJC. \nCOVID-19 precautions: We have your safety in mind as the pandemic continues.
