DESCRIPTION:Please join the Detroit Justice Center at The LOVE Building on November 15th for a free community screening of Coldwater Kitchen\, a film that highlights the highly regarded culinary training program for incarcerated residents at Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater\, Michigan. The film follows chef Jimmy Lee Hill and three of his students as they navigate the challenges of incarceration and reentry. The evening will go from 6-9pm\, starting with a catered dinner offered by Chef Dink of Coldwater Kitchen and the GreenMile Grille. At 7pm\, the film will be screened\, and the night will then conclude with a Q&A panel featuring the chefs from the film.

DESCRIPTION:As the movement for a free Palestine has gained momentum over the last five months\, so too has the repression and backlash of those fighting for Palestinian liberation. Detroit Will Breathe is hosting an in-person\, public mass meeting for people to join together to discuss this backlash\, and draw connections to the repression that came as a response to the 2020 uprisings. This will be a facilitated space open to all who are invested in building and maintaining the movement for a free Palestine to share and connect with others.\n\n  \nThe Love Building has requested a headcount for this event; please RSVP HERE so we can accurately plan. Masks will be required.\n\n  \nThe LOVE Building Accessibility Statement \nLanguage Access: The majority of programming will be done in English. American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation will be available at the event. Seating nearest to the interpreters will be reserved for people using ASL. All presenters and speakers use microphones\, and a mic runner will ensure the audience uses microphones while engaging as well.  \nScent-Free Policy: The LOVE building is cleaned using scent-free cleaners and scent-free soaps are available in each restroom. We ask that visitors refrain from using strongly scented products and perfumes that may trigger allergies\, chemical sensitive reactions\, asthma and more.  \nCOVID-19 & Masks: LOVE Building guests are required to wear a mask except when eating or drinking. \nAbout the LOVE Building: The program will be held in the LOVE Building’s community room on the first floor of the building. There are no steps to enter\, and the building has air conditioning. Gender neutral single stall\, accessible restrooms are available on the first floor near the program room. Natural and LED lighting brighten the space. Visit LOVE Building’s website for more information. \nBus: The Grand River Bus #3 stops at Grand River & Hancock directly in front of the building. At this time this stop does not have a bus shelter.  \nParking: 2 accessible parking spaces are available on the east side of the building\, and 1 van accessible space is available on the west side. Non-accessible parking is also available on either side of the building. Please be careful not to disturb neighbors when parking along the side streets.   \nSeating: A mix of seating including solid stacking chairs and upholstered seating will be available. If at any time you need assistance finding the best seat for you\, please alert an event staff person\, who can assist. Some seating will be reserved as “priority seating” in sight of interpreters and near speakers. We will keep some easy access spaces clear for people using wheelchairs.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 21st Annual Detroit MLK Day Rally & March in honor of the actual historic legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. (Jan. 15\, 1929-April 4\, 1968). \nOur Executive Director\, Nancy Parker\, and our Community Legal Advocate\, Sonja Bonnett\, will both be speakers at this event.\nThis year’s event comes amid a heightening struggle for labor rights and against imperialist war across the United States and the world. \nOur invited speakers include Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib and UAW International President Shawn Fain. The event will be co-chaired by Aurora Harris\, lecturer in African American Studies at the University of Michigan-Dearborn and Abayomi Azikiwe\, editor of the Pan-African News Wire. \nThe rally and march will feature other speakers and artists including Atty. Nancy Parker\, Executive Director of the Detroit Justice Center and Wardell Montgomery\, Detroit poet and songwriter. \nThe rally and march will highlight speakers and artists from the Detroit area reflecting the wealth of community organizers and cultural workers in southeastern Michigan. A broad coalition of these social forces is very much needed in the coming year to meet the challenging facing the people of the city\, the country and the globe. \nBeginning in 2004\, the Michigan Emergency Committee Against War & Injustice (MECAWI) held the first MLK Day Rally & March in downtown Detroit. The following year the Detroit MLK Committee was formed bringing in veteran civil rights and social justice activists as well as younger generations of organizers and artists. \nSince 2019\, the gathering has been held at the Historic St. Matthew’s-St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church located on Woodward Ave. at Holbrook. This venue encompasses the first independent African American Church in the city of Detroit dating back to the mid-19th century. \nThe current period has been characterized by widespread strikes in various sectors of the economy including unions representing autoworkers\, heath care practitioner\, writers\, actors\, entertainment workers\, educators and service employees. During the last few months\, Detroit has been labelled “Strike City” because of the work stoppages involving tens of thousands of workers. \nWe will honor the increasing militant posture of working people\, a tradition in which the city was built upon. Labor unions are encouraged to participate in this event along with their rank-and-file members to symbolize the necessity of organizing and mobilizing the majority of people in order to achieve genuine democracy and economic rights. \nIn addition to labor activism\, we will acknowledge the antiwar and peace traditions of Dr. King\, who was martyred in Memphis\, Tennessee during his intervention in a sanitation workers’ strike in early 1968. Dr. King in the previous year\, 1967\, came out strongly against the U.S. genocidal war in Vietnam. \nToday we are facing yet another genocidal war against the people of Gaza in Palestine. Thousands have been killed including many children utilizing bombs and other weapons supplied by the U.S. government. \nInstead of ending the war in Palestine and Ukraine\, the current administration is demanding over $100 billion more for military adventures and containments from the Middle East and Eastern Europe to the Asia-Pacific and the southern border areas with the U.S. \nWe are rallying and marching for a cessation of militarism and economic exploitation. At the closing rally on November 10\, 1963\, Malcolm X delivered a powerful speech that came to be known as “Message to the Grassroots.” \nThe NNGLC was a moment that helped to crystalize questions that help to build and advance revolutionary movements. In this spirit\, we want to reflect together on the questions: how can reflecting on the NNGLC help move our work forward today? How does the global context influence what we are doing now? SUMMARY:Abolition Means No More War: Free Palestine Now!
DESCRIPTION:About this event\n\n\n\n\nPrison industrial complex (PIC) abolitionists have always understood the work to dismantle the PIC to be connected to global movements against war\, militarism\, and colonialism. In the past few weeks\, we’ve seen mass mobilization in solidarity with the Palestinian people as they face one of the deadliest assaults by the Israeli military in its history. \nOn Wednesday\, Nov 1\, join us for a critical discussion on the ongoing war on Palestine. Dr. Angela Y Davis\, Lara Kiswani (Executive Director of the Arab Resource and Organizing Center)\, Stefanie Fox (Executive Director of Jewish Voice for Peace)\, and Nadine Naber (INCITE! National) will join us in a discussion moderated by Mohamed Shehk (Campaigns Director of Critical Resistance) to help us understand the situation on the ground in Palestine\, how our organizations and people everywhere can mount effective resistance to the genocidal war against Palestinians\, and how we can use abolitionist strategies such as Dismantle-Change-Build\, Divest/Invest & “Defund\,” and “shrink and starve” to do so. \nOrganized by Critical Resistance. This event is also a fundraiser for Middle East Children’s Alliance (MECA)\, who are providing much needed aid to the people of Gaza. All funds will go to MECA after accessibility costs for this event. \nSpeakers: \nAngela Y. Davis is Professor Emerita of History of Consciousness and Feminist Studies at UC Santa Cruz. An activist\, writer\, and lecturer\, her work focuses on prisons\, police\, abolition\, and the related intersections of race\, gender\, and class. She is the author of many books\, from Angela Davis: An Autobiography (now available in a new edition from Haymarket Books) to Freedom Is a Constant Struggle. \nLara Kiswani is the Executive Director of Arab Resource & Organizing Center (AROC)\, serving poor and working class Arabs and Muslims across the San Francisco Bay Area\, and organizing to overturn racism\, forced migration\, and militarism. \nStefanie Fox\, MPH (she/her) is the Executive Director of Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP)\, a grassroots membership organization that organizes and mobilizes hundreds of thousands of Jews and allies into solidarity with the Palestinian freedom struggle and a vision of Judaism beyond Zionism. Stefanie joined JVP in 2009 as the organization’s first National Organizer (when the organization had six chapters and a few hundred members) and played multiple roles as part of the team that grew the organization into the largest progressive Jewish anti-Zionist organization in the world. Stefanie came up as a grassroots organizer\, educator\, and public health practitioner inside the global AIDS movement of the early 2000s\, and spent about a decade in neighborhood and issue-based community organizing toward racial and economic justice before joining JVP full-time. \nNadine Naber is a scholar-activist and co-founder of organizations and programs such as: Mamas Activating Movements for Abolition and Solidarity; the Arab Women’s Solidarity Association; Arab Movement of Women arising for Justice; the Arab American Cultural Center (UIC); and Arab and Muslim American Studies at UM\, Ann Arbor. She is founder of Liberate Your Research Workshops. She has been a board member of groups like INCITE! Feminists of Color against Violence; the Women of Color Resource Center; the Arab American Action Network; Al-Shabaka; and the National Council of Arab Americans. She is Professor in the Gender and Women’s Studies Program and the Global Asian Studies Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
